Thekkady, the toran to the renowned Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is an epitome of Kerala’s pristine natural beauty and the sublime glory of ‘The God’s Own Country’. Located in Idukki district of Kerala near Kumily; the border town of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Thekkady is an Oasis in wilderness. The name Thekkady has derived from the word ‘Thekku’ which means teak trees. Verdant tropical forests characterized by mist enveloped Western Ghats mountains, green carpets of tea plantations blanketing endless rolling slopes of hills, lush green landscapes covered by savannah grass, sparkling rivers cascading through florid countryside, crystal clear lakes creating picturesque vistas and exotic spice estates offer a perfect romantic refuge in the appeasing laps of Mother Nature.
Thekkady is one of the 27 tiger reservoirs in India that provides protection to Indian Tiger; one of the endangered species on the verge of extinction. Apart from tiger, Thekkady is a home to elephant, sambar, gaur, Nilgiri Langurs, lion tailed macaques and many other elusive animals. Originally known as elephant poaching zone, Thekkady today is synonymous with Elephant reserve where elephants and other wildlife can be watched and rolled at very close quarters while thy are in action. The splendid man made lake set up by the Mullaiperiyar Dam across the Periyar River multiplies the charm of the reservoir.
Thekkady, the testimony of nature’s grandeur garbed in impeccable scenic beauty, vibrant colors, spice perfumed air and rich wildlife makes a perfect holiday destination 4000 feet above sea level. The peerless natural beauty and the tranquil ambiance of Thekkady beckon thousands of tourists every year. Thekkady, the heaven of spices like cardamom, clove, black pepper and cinnamon is also a Utopia for adventure enthusiasts. Trekking, Nature Walk, the Periyar Tiger Trail, Bamboo Rafting, Boating, Elephant Rides, Border Hiking and Plantation Tours are the famous adventure sports one would never want to miss here.
